Artists and Creative Types

“Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide.”

– D.W. Winnicott

Artists and Creative Types

Artists are inherently resilient. Many artists have discovered, through the act of creating art, that they can not only influence others, but can tolerate significant psychological distress. The process of creating art is often soothing in itself–the brush strokes, the beats, and the repetitive movements for example. Personal issues may become subtly infused into a painting, or a story, or in lyrics that can help the artist confront those issues from a more effective distance. The artist and the audience may also feel mutually understood by a creative work, providing a deep sense that we are not alone in the world… that our hopes and sufferings are shared experiences.

With a background in the arts, I have a unique interest in supporting artists. My therapy with artists focuses on: (1) Helping artists remove psychological barriers that may be preventing them from discovering their artistic voice or expressing themselves, (2) Helping artists unlock the healing power of art for both the creator and their audience, and (3) Listening to the artist’s creative work and addressing those infused psychological themes that may parallel the artist’s personal challenges.
